Beginning his career in the late forties, Dockery compiled a remarkable amateur record. He won his first Golden Gloves tournament at the age of 14. Before he was finished, Dockery chalked up 95 wins and 13 amateur championships. He lost 14 bouts. Seventy-three of his victories were by knockout. While serving as a U.S. paratrooper during the early fifties, Dockery compiled a record of 10-2 on his way to the South Korean (KOM-2) championship. He won tournaments all around the Carolinas including the Mount Holly Golden Gloves four times. Dockery never lost a fight in Mount Holly.
Now semi-retired, Dockery owns an electrical contracting business. He and wife Connie have four children and six grandchildren.
